This is an English translation provided for convenience. The Norwegian version, Personvernerklæring, is the authoritative one.
Motorverdi (motorverdi.no) is a Norwegian vehicle-history and valuation service. This policy explains which personal data we process, why, and what rights you have. Motorverdi is the data controller, and you can reach us at hei@motorverdi.no.
What data we process
- Account details: name, email address, and password (stored as a cryptographic hash). If you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address, and profile picture from your Google account instead of a password.
- Login sessions: IP address and browser type associated with active sessions, for security purposes.
- Use of the service: vehicles you save as favorites or register as your own in the service.
- Search history: the registration numbers or VINs you search for, with a timestamp and IP address, linked to your account when you are logged in. The search log is used to operate, secure, and improve the service and is deleted automatically after 90 days.
What the data is used for
The data is used solely to provide the service: creating and securing your account, and sending email to confirm your address at sign-up and to reset your password. We do not send marketing, and we do not sell or share your data with third parties for their own purposes. The legal basis is our agreement with you (GDPR Article 6(1)(b)).
Cookies
We use a single strictly necessary cookie: a session cookie that keeps you signed in. We use no third-party tracking or advertising tools, and the usage statistics described below are collected without cookies. That is why there is no cookie banner.
Usage statistics
To understand how the service is used, we collect anonymous usage statistics – which pages are visited, where visitors come from, browser type and screen size – with Umami, an open-source analytics tool we host ourselves on our own servers in Stockholm. No cookies are set and nothing is stored in your browser. Page views within the same day are linked using a hash of IP address and browser type with a key that changes daily; the IP address is only used to estimate the country and is not stored. The statistics cannot be traced back to you or your account, are not shared with anyone, and we honour the browser's "Do Not Track" setting. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in operating and improving the service (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)).
Data processors and storage
The service is hosted on Amazon Web Services in Stockholm (region eu-north-1, within the EEA), and transactional email is sent via Amazon SES. Google is a data processor only if you choose to sign in with Google. Data is kept for as long as you have an account; accounts not confirmed within 7 days are deleted automatically.
Vehicle data
Technical vehicle information comes from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration's (Statens vegvesen) open API (CC BY 4.0). Looking up a registration number shows information about the vehicle, never about its owner — the service does not display owner information.
Listing data
The service also uses information from publicly available vehicle listings on marketplaces such as finn.no and auksjonen.no — for example price, mileage, equipment, and when the listing was published. This data is used to show listing history for vehicles and to compute value estimates and price statistics. Listings may contain registration numbers, which are considered personal data when the vehicle is owned by a private individual. We never display information about the seller or about who owns or has owned a vehicle. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in providing reliable vehicle history and price statistics (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)).
Motorverdi is an independent service and is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by FINN.no, Auksjonen.no, or any other marketplace we source listing data from. All trademarks belong to their respective owners.
Your rights
You have the right to access, rectify, and erase the data we hold about you, as well as the right to data portability. Contact us at hei@motorverdi.no to exercise your rights or delete your account, and we will respond without undue delay. You may also lodge a complaint with the Norwegian Data Protection Authority (Datatilsynet) if you believe our processing violates data protection law.
Changes
If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the date at the top and notify registered users by email when the changes require it.
